VALLEY VISITS

Come Discover Carefree & Cave Creek

Caviar and cowboys…fine art and Western ballads…golf balls and gold pans; these are just a few of the contrasting images conjured up by two distinctly different Western towns. However, Carefree and Cave Creek do share at least one element—an emphasis on natural beauty. If you want to leave the tall buildings and hustle and bustle behind, take a short jaunt north of the city. At the gateway to vast stretches of wide-open desert, get ready for a pristine vista of imposing mountains. Mammoth rocks, 12 million years in the making, appear carelessly flung aside by a gigantic hand. By day, the sky is vast and blue, interrupted only by mountain peaks. At night, the stars shine big and bright and seem close enough to touch. A coyote serenades the moon. Stately saguaros, hundreds of years old, guard the land. Welcome to Carefree/Cave Creek—one of Arizona’s last frontiers.

Harold’s Cave Creek Corral

The Original Wild West saloon and restaurant Since Harold started the place in about 1935, Harold’s has always been the center of Cave Creek activity. It has spawned a million crazy stories...from lions and tigers caged in the back to Harold himself along with his flamboyant friends, movie stars, (real) cowboys, and other colorful characters. Many celebrities have frequented Harold’s. Some to wine and dine on the fine food and some because it was their film location. Warner Bros. filmed Rafferty and The Gold Dust Twins starring Mackenzie Phillips, Alan Arkin, and Sally Kellerman; other films were Electroglide in Blue starring Robert Blake and Jeannie Riley and Little Foss and Big Halsey with Robert Redford. Dick Van Dyke and Hugh Downs frequent Harold’s, but then, the locals always know the best spots.

Harold’s is the place in Cave Creek, Arizona, for good food, great music, and a dang good time. Hitch yer hat, hang yer hoss, and kick back to enjoy some good times eatin’, drinkin’, and dancin’. Harold’s serves up the best durned cooking in these here parts (or any other parts, for that matter). We surely hope you will visit Harold’s. And when you do, take a minute to browse through the photographs on the walls of the wonderful characters that frequent Harold’s. Hope to see you real soon.

Open every day for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and fun from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Stagecoach Village

The historic Western town of Cave Creek has always been a highlight for locals and visitors of Arizona who are in pursuit of the Wild West. Cave Creek is known for its unpretentiousness and a taste of what the “good ole West” really was, with its saloons, western shops, and live music. You may not know that this majestic town was established as a gold mining town and a stopping point for the US Cavalry in the mid 1870s. While most of the original buildings are long gone, there are many that are still standing, allowing visitors to reminisce about the magic and mystery of the Old West.

Every town in the Phoenix metropolitan area has experienced unprecedented growth over the past few years, including the tiny town of Cave Creek. Yet even with the growth, Cave Creek has been able to maintain the rugged, wild Western town appeal. Complementing that Wild West feeling is the newly constructed Stagecoach Village. The grand opening is scheduled for early 2008. Designed to take you back in time, Stagecoach Village is nestled between Black Mountain, Skull Mesa, Elephant Butte, and the Continental Mountain range.

Stagecoach Village consists of 85,000 square feet of retail and restaurants for lease or purchase as well as 25,000 square feet of office condos for sale. Specialty retail shops are also available and include a wine bar, French restaurant, upscale clothing boutiques, fine art galleries, gift and jewelry stores, day spa, and home accessories as a tenant base. The developer is in negotiations with a seafood restaurant, microbrewery, and Italian restaurants.

The center of the plaza at Stagecoach has a cabana for live musical events. There are hitching posts for neighbors who fancy riding their horses over for an evening glass of wine. Motorcycle enthusiasts will look forward to the ride to visit the retail boutiques, galleries, and saloons as they watch the sun set over the Black Mountains. Kids will laugh with joy sitting on the bronze horse and cowboy, imagining riding off for a roundup in the Old West. Come on down and help us make Stagecoach Village a place that the whole Southwest will want to come to.

Valerie’s Furniture & Accents

Specializing in the work of Southwestern regional artisans, Valerie’s features one-of-a-kind Western furniture and accents made by American craftsmen. Echoing the spirit of the Old West and the beauty of the Southwestern desert, Valerie's is located in Cave Creek, Arizona, a quick trail ride north from Scottsdale and Phoenix.

Valerie’s is a well-worth destination along the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive (www.scenicdrive.org), which provides a delightful adventure from the Valley lowlands up through lush high-Sonoran desert and scenic mountains to the amazingly accessible yet “true” Western town of Cave Creek.

Valerie’s Furniture & Accents recently celebrated their 18th anniversary in the Valley of the Sun. Long-time customers and out-of-area visitors alike enjoy treasure hunting for rare Western antiques and strolling casually through the festive, bold Western home furnishings. And as the only full-line furniture store in the Phoenix area’s far north Valley, Valerie’s also carries high-quality furniture lines such as Old Hickory Tannery and Burton James.

Owner Valerie Watters works with larger furniture manufacturers to choose leathers, hides, fabrics, and other materials to create unique originals. Many of her local craftsmen have been with her since she opened and have grown their businesses with hers.

Valerie’s evokes the spirit of the Old West with all its vibrant color, rich texture, unbridled originality, and warm hospitality. The store appeals to a special nostalgia for the Old West that endures. “There is a certain amount of romance for the cowboy, who was always the good guy with high morals and values,” Watters has said. “It seems everybody wants to be a cowboy, even if they can only bring a little of that spirit into their living rooms.”

The showroom bursts at the seams with classic Western furnishings and accessories, with shipments of new items arriving every day. You will enjoy strolling through the imaginative product displays in ever-changing vignettes.

Voted Best of the Valley by Phoenix Magazine, Valerie’s is described as “…a cross between ‘cowboy’ and ‘cool’…unlike anything you’ll find anywhere else.” The 4,200-square-foot showroom is the largest full-line furniture store in Cave Creek. They also carry Traditional, Old World, and Tuscan designs. They ship around the world. Closed on Monday. AE, MC, V.
